Electromagnetic electron Kelvin–Helmholtz instability

چکیده

On electron kinetic scales, ions and electrons decouple, velocity shear on inertial length ∼de can trigger electromagnetic (EM) Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (EKHI). In this paper, we present an analytic study of EM EKHI in inviscid collisionless plasma with a step-function flow. We show that incompressible plasma, the ideal frozen-in condition E+ve×B/c=0 must be broken for to occur. flow, is replaced by magnetic flux conservation, i.e., ∇×(E+ve×B/c)=0, resulting dispersion relation similar standard magnetohydrodynamics KHI. The field parallel streaming suppresses due tension. threshold mode (k·ΔUe)2>ne1+ne2ne1ne2[ne1(vAe1·k)2+ne2(vAe2·k)2], where vAe=B/(4πmene)1/2, ΔUe, ne are densities, respectively. growth rate γem∼Ωce, which gyro-frequency.

Exploratory Data Analysis of The KelvinHelmholtz instability in Jets

The KelvinHelmholtz (KH) instability is a fundamental wave instability that is frequently observed in all kinds of shear layer (jets, wakes, atmospheric air currents etc). The study of KH-instability, coherent flow structures has a major impact in understanding the fundamentals of fluid dynamics. Therefore there is a need for methods that can identify and analyse these structures. In this Final...

Plasma instability and amplification of electromagnetic waves in low-dimensional electron systems

A general electrodynamic theory of a grating coupled two dimensional electron system (2DES) is developed. The 2DES is treated quantum mechanically, the grating is considered as a periodic system of thin metal strips or as an array of quantum wires, and the interaction of collective (plasma) excitations in the system with electromagnetic field is treated within the classical electrodynamics. It ...

Electromagnetic instability of the Thomson Problem

– The classical Thomson problem of n charged particles confined to the surface of a sphere of radius a is analyzed within the Darwin approximation of electrodynamics. For n < nc(a) the ground state corresponds to a hexagonal Wigner crystal with a number of topological defects. However, if n > nc(a) the Wigner lattice is unstable with respect to small perturbations and the ground state becomes s...

Hot-electron Instability in Superconductors

High flux velocities in a superconductor can distort the quasiparticle distribution function and elevate the electronic temperature. Close to Tc, a non-thermal distribution function shrinks the vortex core producing the well-known Larkin-Ovchinnikov flux instability. In the present work we consider the opposite limit of low temperatures, where electron-electron scattering is more rapid than ele...
